Berg Katse was the second-in-command officer of Galactor, working directly under the true leader, Sosai X and a major antagonist in Science Ninja Team Gatchaman. He/she appeared in every episode to carry out the plans of Galactor for world domination. Later he/she is revealed to have been manipulated to join Galactor by X in order to become his pawn.
Background
Berg Katse was created by the alien Sosai X to lead the terrorist organization Galactor to take over the world. He/she is a gestalt entity created through the fusion of fraternal twins while still in the womb. Because his/her component parts were male and female, Berg Katse was prone to switch sexes almost every year in his/her life, forcing him to hide his/her identity until he could control it in his/her adulthood, becoming a master of disguise as a result. This bizarre burden led to him to be easily recruited and manipulated by Sōsai X when he contacted Katse and convinced him that he/she was a superior being.
Appearance
Berg Katse's most recognized form is a person with red lipstick while wearing a purple outfit consisting of a mask with long ears, a yellow emblem on the forehead, a dark purple cape with a red interior, a black belt with a large red shield-shaped buckle and long red boots in gloves. For most of the series, he is seen as either a man or a woman with varied appearances due to his nature.
Personality
Berg Katse is known for his/her dark mood swings to the point of hysteria. He/she is incredibly loyal to Sosai X, having been the only the place he/she was accepted without prejudice. Katse has a strong hate for the world for rejecting him/her and believes that he/she is serving justice by helping Sosai X conquer the world.
Abilities and Equipment
Disguises
Berg Katse is a master of disguise having been switching between a man and woman for most of his/her life. He/she is able to blend into environments of people that fool everyone even the most advanced technology.
Intelligence
Berg Katse as a result of having a pair of brains fused together has an IQ of 280 or higher. This allows him to formulate complex plans that would normally take years of consideration for the average person. In the field, he/she can command plans on the fly even when they go awry.
Combat
Berg Katse is a highly skilled fighter, able to fight against several enemies at once, even the whole Gatchaman team with all of their skills and equipment.
Bolster
Katse commands a flying saucer where he commands his/her troops and is capable of piloting it in a manner that not even the God Phoenix can pursue it.
History
Eventually, Katse learned that Sōsai X was only using him and has no more need for him or the Earth, he commits suicide rather than live with the knowledge that he was just a freak of nature. In the OVA remake, he is fatally stabbed by Ken. He is voiced by Mikio Terashima in the original series and Kaneto Shiozawa in the OVA. In English, he is voiced by Keye Luke in Battle of the Planets, Bill Capizzi in G-Force: Guardians of Space, R. Martin Klein in the OVA, and Edwin Neal in the ADV dub of the series. Katse was also called Zoltar in Battle of the Planets , Galactor in G-Force and Lukan in Eagle Riders. In the English dub of the Gatchaman '94 OVA, he was called Solaris. In some English-language versions of the series, Katse's female form was identified as a separate figure, his sister.
