Dave (デーブー), in actuality Spy V (スパイＶ), was a one-shot character appearing in episode 85 of Science Ninja Team Gatchaman.
Background[]
All that is known of Dave is that he was a secret Galactor intelligence agent, part of their special group GCIA. He and a group of Blackbirds had infiltrated Utoland to target the Science Ninja Team and find out their identities.
Appearance[]
Dave had the appearance of large, middle-aged hippie, with long brown hair and a beard. He wore a yellow circlet around his head, a yellow T-shirt with a blue "V" in the center, a red sash, blue jeans, and gray loafers. Over the T-shirt, he could be seen to wear a long, fringed purple vest that matches his wristbands. He carried around a red-and-white striped smoking pipe, which was actually a communication device he used to report to Berg Katse with.
Personality[]
Dave would act as if he was a friendly, Osakan-accented stranger and hitchhiked to get his way onto Jinpei's buggy. He quickly became popular with the Ninja Team for being a hard worker at the Snack J, all while they were initially unaware of his spy status. He feigned a great curiosity in wanting to know the team, claiming to be a fan.
When dropping his facade, he was shown to be a serious-minded agent, who aimed to be promoted to a Galactor Captain. He used his quick deductions to figure Joe may be a Science Ninja, and tried to figure that out about Jinpei, but the Science Ninja Team turned out to be faster at figuring out his own identity when they overheard him talking to Katse. It was Dave's soft spot for Jinpei that ultimately led to him refusing to tell Katse the team's identities, to which he paid for with his life when Katse blew up the GCIA mecha and the bridge it was on.

While Jinpei was annoyed by Dave at first, having realized the man was looking for work gave him an idea to hire him for the Snack J. Dave actedas a fatherly sort of figure in helping Jinpei recuperate from his buggy accident, all while trying to covertly find out if he wasa Science Ninja. When the rest of the team noted how Jinpei made a mistake in trusting Dave, Jun realized that it was because he sought out a fatherly figure.
Jinpei was betrayed at overhearing on his bracelet that Dave was a spy, and went off on his own to try to take on Katse in the city. At that, Dave realized that Jinpei was indeed a Science Ninja. Still, Jinpei couldn't hate Dave, and Dave also felt bad for his deception.

Dave was renamed Joe, and his codename was Galactor's Agent 5 (interpreting the "V" on his shirt as the Roman numeral for 5).

- The spelling of his name in katakana marks a pun, where besides having the Western name "Dave", it describes his fat body (debu).
- The ADV Films dub localized his Galactor codename to Agent V, even displaying that name in their subtitle track as an ADV-ism while the dialogue is clearly heard as "Spy V".
