Devil Star #2 (デブルスター2号), her true name unknown, was a guest villain that appeared in episode 31 of Science Ninja Team Gatchaman.
Background[]
Devil Star #2's origins are mysterious, other than the little known about her through others' dialogue. She was born as a child of Galactor but had hoped to do more in her life outside of her job, and also had an aspiration to marry. These dreams were unfortunately impossible and cut short by her death, while the rest of her family in Galactor may or may not have all perished as well.
There is some similarity yet differences to the later character of Maya, who openly expressed a desire to leave the organization but could never achieve such freedom.
Appearance[]
Out of costume, this young woman is a tall, slender individual with short, dark blonde hair and blue eyes. She wears a long orange overcoat with maroon trim at the shoulders, a salmon pink turtleneck shirt, and red bell-bottom jeans. Completing the outfit are a pair of purple loafers, and a gray sash tied around her waist.
As a Devil Star, she wears a magenta jumpsuit with black fur trim at the neck and a pair of yellow stars situated on her breasts. She accessorizes the suit with teal boots and red, wrist-length gloves that have black fur trim, and a large black belt around her waist.
Like the other Devil Stars, she wears a distinctive full-face mask and bob-cut wig; her own wig is light blonde, while the mask is teal with red markings and yellow eye lenses. She also can be seen to have large, round, red earrings.
Personality[]
Outside of her job, Devil Star #2 appeared to be an ordinary young woman fond of driving a race car and momentarily forgetting her most important priorities to Galactor. While on the job, she was determined on completing her mission at whatever costs.
Relationships[]
Joe[]
Like Joe, she also was the second-in-command of her team although they were unaware of each others' identities. He managed to rescue her from her malfunctioning car on the track, and she would admit to loving the race track as a way to de-stress when aggravated, much similar to how he would. The two decided to make plans to race for the following day.
She would be slapped by the Lady Captain for arriving late to work, but Joe would only find it suspicious with how wicked the woman looked and thought little else.
Upon seeing Devil Star #2's rose bomb during their battle, Joe remarks how it's "that rose" that killed his parents. After his feather shuriken stabs and pins her bomb to her chest, with her Devil Star ship continuing to fly and take her far away from his sight, #2's final line of dialogue confirms her unfortunate familial destiny:
"Why? Why can't children of Galactor escape from Galactor? I was looking forward to tomorrow's race too."
Thus, Joe would unfortunately wind up killing his planned race date in her Devil Star guise, and never learned that they were one and the same until much later on in the series.
Alan[]
In fact, it was later revealed that this Devil Star and Alan were lovers and had planned to be married some day, but she was unable to leave Galactor. Alan knew of her Galactor membership and remarked on the tragedy of her being stuck there due to her family. Galactor would inform him of her death, as well as the fact that a "Joe the Condor" had killed her.
Mother[]
Devil Star #2's mother was in fact the very Devil Star who killed Joe's parents, and gave him a trigger related to the rose bomb she used (and that he had to see once more with the woman's daughter). Because this woman, her husband, and their other children were part of the organization, Devil Star #2's fate as a child of Galactor was sealed from her very birth.
While made more direct in outside materials, the two womens' connection is implied in the episode due to both women using the rose bomb as their special technique (while the other four Devil Stars seen in the plot didn't ever specifically use that weapon anywhere). This is emphasized in a piece of the Lady Captain's dialogue:
"Devil Star #2! It doesn't appear that you are completely used to being a member of Galactor. But in order to protect our secrets, the children of Galactor members are forbidden from leaving Galactor. You, go kill Gatchaman with the killing techniques you learned from your mother. Also, don't be concerned when one plan fails and just continue on to the next plan."
It is unknown whether this mother is currently alive or dead, though it is probable she may have died with one of the times the Science Ninjas foiled Galactor or had died prior to the series.
Berg Katse/Galactor's Lady Captain[]
Katse (in lady mode) is present as #2's boss. The Lady Captain is harsh towards #2, slapping her for being late and reminding her of her duties. She is also quick to remind #2 of her ultimate mission and that she can't leave the organization.
Weapons and Arsenal[]
Devil Star #2 had her own tricks she used in battle, as did her fellow Devil Star members.
Devil Star S Aircraft[]
She rides along in a small, purple-and-red personal jet. These jets also have the ability to ride on land, as she and the other four demonstrate within the episode.
Rose Bomb[]
The signature weapon of #2, which she learned to use from her mother. It has the appearance of a pretty pink rose, but is in fact a deadly explosive device.
Alterations in International Adaptations[]
Battle of the Planets[]
She was split into two identical (when masked) characters, Yana (in her first scene) and Lani Hill. Jason meets her hitch-hiking on the race track (with her car's destruction cut), but Lani tells him they won't be able to see each other again. Her final fate is unknown, as later scenes involving Joe and Devil Star #2 were cut to remove her death and that whole subplot.
G-Force: Guardians of Space[]
She was renamed STAR-ONE, and her death (as well as those of her comrades) was softened by dialogue claiming she was a cyborg and one that had only recently began to feel human emotions. Dr. Brighthead, in his narration, states that he knew this as well but decided to keep this secret from Dirk.
As episode 81 was not adapted due to Tatsunoko not having the simple English script for Fred Ladd, it is unknown how later developments with her could have been explained.
Voice Actors[]
She was voiced by Keiko Tomochika.
English Adaptations[]
- Battle of the Planets: Takayo Fischer (Yana), Janet Waldo (Lani Hill)
- G-Force: Guardians of Space: Barbara Goodson
- ADV dub: Samantha Inoue-Harte

Trivia[]
- While some guides to Gatchaman list the concept of Devil Star #2's mother being the very Devil Star that killed the Asakuras as a "theory", the fact no other Devil Stars on her team use the rose bombs as well as the Fantastic TV Collection essay The Love and Suffering in Gatchaman back up the two being connected. With the later development of Joe's parents also being Galactor agents betraying the organization in mind, Joe and Devil Star #2 are further linked in parallels as "children of Galactor", without knowing each others' circumstances.
