Toda (戸田) is a guest character that appears in episode 72 of Science Ninja Team Gatchaman.
Background[]
Toda is an independent and reclusive scientist. Though he was a laughingstock among the peaceful scientific community about his observations, he persisted with them instead of selling out to Galactor.
Appearance[]
Toda is an elderly man with shoulder-length white hair, a mustache, and glasses. He at first can be seen dressed in a fancy brown suit at the Snack J, but then puts on a khaki shirt and darker pants more appropriate for exploring the Amazon.
Personality[]
Toda is troubled by the oncoming grasshopper crisis, swearing that the insect will be trying to wipe out the human race. He professes to Jinpei and Jun that nobody has taken him seriously on this.
Relationships[]
Jinpei[]
Jun and Jinpei were the first to meet Toda, who drank 10 glasses of ice water. When he asked for another glass, it bothered Jinpei but Jun kindly asked if everything was okay. Jinpei ended up accompanying Toda, wanting to capture and sell many grasshoppers. He didn't believe Toda's warning about the swarm until after their pilot abandoned ship.
The other members did not accompany them since they did not suspect Galactor at the time. They assumed Jinpei was irresponsible and greedy and were ready to punish him. Jinpei assisted Toda in completing the mission. Since communication was impossible, he decided to spray insect repellent on the jungle in the shape of the Bird Scramble.
After Jinpei was rescued and the situation resolved, Toda stayed behind in the Amazon to rebuild.
