Hemler (ヘムラー) is a guest character that appeared in episode 96 of Science Ninja Team Gatchaman.
Background[]
Hemler is a cryptic presence throughout the episode, trailing the Science Ninja Team and seeming to be a whole other force who has it out to sabotage them before eventually having to work together with them.
Appearance[]
Hemler is a young man with similar facial features to that of Ken Washio, except for his hair being somewhat shorter and pale blond color, and him having a slightly tanned complexion. He wears a long, deep gray belted shirt, khaki pants, and black shoes. He toted around a rifle on his back, which he tried to use to snipe the team.
Personality[]
Hemler is set on trying to assassinate the Science Ninja Team members in any way he can; such attempts include trying to run them off the road with his Jeep, drop a boulder on them, or shoot them.
This is all due to a grudge he bears on the team over his underwater farm having been destroyed in a battle between them and Galactor. He had seen the Science Ninjas as no better than those terrorists due to the fact so much collateral damage would be caused from the fighting, and him losing his dreams and fortune from the loss of his farm. This would lead him to be determined to fight both factions.
He comes to an understanding with the team, but still reminds them to consider the civilians affected by their battles.

Berg Katse[]
When captured, Hemler was defiant enough to openly spit in Katse's face, leading to him to be beat and then taken to be drowned.
Ken[]
After Ken rescued Hemler from drowning, he bore witness to the Science Ninjas' further struggles against Katse and decided to bail Ken and the rest out by pulling a lever to open up the chamber.
After the battle was done but more damages resulted in people dying in Break Town, Ken would learn of Hemler's reasoning for trying to kill the Science Ninja Team and how his farm was ruined. Hemler would part ways with Ken and the rest, claiming he'd start over, but urged them to win the war against Galactor.

Battle of the Planets[]
Hemler was adapted as Kolb, a native of the planet Venus. Kolb and other people of the planet greatly distrust anyone from outside it, and have been menaced by Spectra. He initially mistakes G-Force as being part of Spectra, and tries to dispatch of them. Later, Kolb explains that Spectra had killed his family so he aims to avenge them by hunting down any Spectran agents he sees.

Hemler was voiced by Hideyuki Tanaka, who would later go on to voice Count Egobossler's younger self in episode 27 of Gatchaman Fighter.

- Hemler is a case of a character whose name is not spoken in the episode, but only revealed via the credits and the scripts. His counterpart of Kolb in Battle of the Planets is a similar case, with his name only being revealed in the script for the episode.
- His name comes from the Thuringian German surname, which means "castrator of rams", originating from the Middle High German word hamel (ram) + er.
