Jim (ジム) is one of the guest characters appearing in episode 42 of Science Ninja Team Gatchaman. He is one of the various inmates at Jinjin Prison who Galactor aim to make part of their organization in arranging a large break-out.
Background[]
It is unknown what crimes Jim must have committed to wind up at Jinjin, though considering that it is a high-security prison for the worst criminals around and its inmates are on the death row awaiting the electric chair, he must have done something particularly heinous. Even so, he longs to find some way out to see his family again.
Appearance[]
Jim is a big, tall man with dark brown hair and a thick beard. He is first seen dressed in the standard Jinjin prison coverall, although later when Galactor outfits the inmates with their own trooper uniforms, Jim is shown sporting a deep blue and gray variation of the standard green get-up.
Personality[]
A hardened criminal, Jim nonetheless insists his days of doing wrong are over. He cares greatly for a pair of seagulls at the prison, referring to them by the names of his wife and daughter (Stella and Mary). He doesn't like the idea of joining Galactor, and truly believes that there is some way he can escape and reunite with his loved ones.
Jim's later attempt at running away is foiled by his superior Blackie, who wants him to come along with the other prisoners to the Galactor base, only for them to be tricked back into Jinjin. Jim is left heartbroken that he wound up right back where he started, and will die a prisoner, with only the seagulls as his company.
Relationships[]
Ryu[]
Ryu befriends Jim while he is stuck in Jinjin after having hitchhiked and been picked up by a Galactor prison van that arrived there to perform the break-out operation. Jim expresses his hopes and dreams to Ryu, but also warns him to keep a straight path, seeming bothered that an innocent young man like Ryu is in the prison too.
After the prisoners are returned to Jinjin and the Galactor situation is resolved, Ryu is shown staring sadly at the prison and thinking how Jim won't be able to see his wife and daughter again, the rest of the Science Ninjas unaware of the situation he encountered.
Stella and Mary[]
Jim's wife and daughter, shown in a photo he keeps. He wonders if Mary will grow up to be beautiful like her mother, and talks of how she really loves red flowers.
Alterations in International Adaptations[]
Battle of the Planets[]
Jim's subplot was entirely removed, with his seemingly unnamed equivalent's interactions with Tiny being shortened. All that really remains would be his love for seagulls, with him claiming that they're better than pets since you don't have to walk them. The prison is renamed to Barracuda Penitentiary.
G-Force: Guardians of Space[]
Jim's storyline was intact, although he was renamed Butch and his wife was renamed Susan/"Sue" when he spoke of her.
Voice Actors[]
Jim was voiced by Takuzo Kamiyama.

Trivia[]
- Just as the inmate Ale Capon is modeled after Al Capone in name but not necessarily appearance or personality, Jim appears to have taken some inspiration from Robert Franklin Stroud, the "Birdman of Alcatraz", in his care of birds.
