Gatchaman Wiki
Advertisement

This listing comprises many locations seen in the original Science Ninja Team Gatchaman franchise, from the first series to its sequels (II and Fighter) and some place names present in the OVA remake.

While some are based in the real world, Tatsunoko liked to use fictional locales many times in order to cultivate an international and "stateless" impression for their shows (such as Casshan having European-inspired cities, and Hurricane Polymar taking place in the equally USA and Japan-inspired Amehon). Sometimes there may be locations that overlap depending on the series, as there were different writers for various scripts and the sequels came much later. There may also be cases where fictional countries are referred to alongside real ones, or interchangeably, such as a Fighter episode referencing cuisine from countries like Mexico, Italy, Spain, and France while otherwise prioritizing fake and altered location names in the work.

The names of these locations in the different localizations of Gatchaman will also be noted where applicable. When it comes to Battle of the Planets, various countries and cities were instead often adapted to be locations on entirely different planets and asteroids in the galaxy (even if they'd look no different from Earth).

It is also important to remember that even international translations that try to follow closer to the series will often have their own ways of interpreting these location names, in lieu of anything official by Tatsunoko, or outright mistakes and inconsistency cropping up. These differences are also listed.

Countries of the "Gatchaman" World[]

Aberia Republic[]

(アベリア共和国)

Mentioned in: OVA episode 2

A country mentioned in this part of the OVA as having many people already recruited into Galactor. It may or may not have relation to the Aberian Peninsula mentioned earlier on in Gatchaman Fighter.

Amehon[]

(アメホン国)

Appears in: II episode 5

A country that is invaded by neanderthals, who are humans from Fulguinea that had been transformed by Galactor.

While the name is re-used from Hurricane Polymar and would be a fusion of the Japanese names for the USA and Japan, it should not be assumed that means both series are seriously connected and would be more of a fun homage. There is also re-use of the "Amehon" name in other Tatsunoko series, owing to the merger of Japanese and Western elements; it can be seen either mentioned or outright utilized in Tekkaman, Gowapper 5 Godam, Yatterman, Gold Lightan, and Muteking.

This country is identified as being where Utoland is located in Infini-T Force, though there is nothing confirming this in the original franchise.

Sentai Filmworks' subs for II appear to miss out on the name etymology, rendering the country as Amehorn.

Edo City[]

(エド市)

Appears in: Fighter episode 32

A city that Kamo's grandson Shoichi travels from. The name of such a location was first seen in Gowapper 5 Godam, and re-used here.

Ameria[]

(アメリア国)

Appears in: Episode 43

A country that had frequently been at war with Bien, until a ceasefire was established and the countries' prince and princess planned to marry. This does not please Galactor, who wants the underground resources of both countries, and drives their attempt to cause new grounds for war.

The "Ameria" name is re-used for a country in episodes 3 and 4 of Gatchaman II, however, it appears the country itself is more of a stand-in for the United States and analogous to the below country Ameris.

Julia is meant to be the royal belonging to this country, although it never comes up in the finalized episode dialogue (though her status as a princess is mentioned in the "next on" preview for the very episode).

Ameris[]

(アメリス国)

Appears in: Episode 11, 24, 25, 63, 76, 79, 96

The most frequently-seen country in the series, and a stand-in for the United States. Its name appears to derive from both America, as well as Igirisu (England).

As stated above, there are a few instances early on in II where this country appears to be renamed Ameria instead, which was an entirely different location in the original series, although the "Ameris" name is used later again. For the sake of trying to give some congruity, the "Ameria" locations in II are also included here.

The ADV dub mistakenly translates Ameris in the Neon Giant plot as "Amerisima", likely confusing it with the Amerishima of the prior episode.

Amegapolis[]

(アメガポリス)

Appears in: Episodes 24, 75, 94

A large city in Ameris, home to the ISO headquarters. It is destroyed by a tsunami at the end of II, necessitating a relocation of the ISO's main base.

Bluestone Park[]

(ブルーストーン公園)

Appears in: Episode 25

A famous national park located in the country. It is notable for its mountain with the carvings of presidents, as well as the face of Jesus Christ. The name comes from Yellowstone Park.

Break Town[]

Appears in: Episode 96

A city in Ameris, located near Mammoth Canyon.

Cascade Desert[]

(カスカード砂漠)

Appears in: II episode 3

A desert seen in this plot, where Galactor is seen to be targeting the enriched uranium being transported there by the national guard.

Delah Desert[]

(デラ砂漠)

Appears in: II episode 4

A desert located on the eastern side, between the cities of Scrapton and New Jork.

Ebatta Desert[]

(エバッタ砂漠)

Appears in: Episode 76

A hot desert, with its name likely parodying Nevada and being based off the Mojave desert.

Frangeles[]

(フランジェルス)

Appears in: II episode 3

A city inspired by San Francisco and Los Angeles, with an island known as "Alamo Island" modeled after Alcatraz.

Mammoth Canyon[]

(マンモスキャニオン)

Appears in: Episode 96

A large canyon in Ameris, located near Break Town. The Yellow River (イエロー川) flows through here.

The name parodies that of the Grand Canyon.

New Jork City[]

(ニュージョーク市)

Appears in: II episode 4

Another large city, with its name inspired from New York. It is first mentioned in II as the nation's capital, though can later can be seen to be where the new headquarters of the ISO is located in Fighter, the series where it gets the most usage.

Wadson River[]

(ワドソン川)

Appears in: Fighter episode 17

A river located in New Jork City, based off the Hudson River.

Riverside Park[]

(リバーサイドパーク)

Appears in: Fighter episode 30

A park in New Jork City that the Science Ninja Team must investigate alien activity in.

Old Heaven City[]

(オールドヘブン市)

Appears in: Fighter episode 23

This city is targeted by Galactor due to the King of Tangania visiting in the plot. It appears to be located in close proximity to New Jork City.

Saint Magdala Island[]

(センタマグダラ島)

Appears in: Fighter episode 40

An island located near New Jork City.

Sarasa Desert[]

(サラサ砂漠)

Appears in: Episode 83

Another desert, with its name seeming to parody the Sahara (though such a place is not located in the USA).

Scrapton[]

(スクラプトン)

Mentioned in: II episode 4

A city located on the eastern side of the country of Ameria/Ameris. Dr. Nambu indicates that the Delah Desert is between it and New Jork, when explaining how the desert has an underground Galactor base. Its name seems to derive from Scranton, a city in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Yellow Sand City[]

(イエローサンド市)

Appears in: Episode 83

A city located near the Sarasa Desert, where the ISO is building a Mantle Energy Factory.

Amerishima[]

(アメリシマ国)

Appears in: Episode 23

A country devastated by the Mecha Ball. Its name may be a portmanteau of America + Hiroshima.

Assham[]

(アッシャム国)

Appears in: Episode 80

A country modeled after India. It is famous for its peacocks. In Battle of the Planets, it is adapted as actually being India itself.

Atari[]

(アタリー国)

Appears in: Episode 54

Ataria Republic[]

(アタリア共和国)

Mentioned in: Fighter episode 3

A country in Iroppa evidently based from Italy, though separate from Imaria (the Italy stand-in at the end of the original series) or that similar-sounding country named Atari.

Atrena[]

(アトレナ国)

Mentioned in: Episode 4 (scenario version)

A country mentioned as having had strange seismic activity occur, along with another nearby country Biyaarasandra.

Since this reference to the country was dropped in the finalized script, it may no longer be "canon" but does stand as another example of a fictional location in the series.

Atrena is ultimately used in the Only One Earth mini-series by Tommy Lee Edwards; in this comic, it is interpreted as being a small coastal nation inspired by places like Monaco.

Bahar[]

(バハール国)

Mentioned in: OVA episode 2

A country who Galactor has increased the military budget of by 20%.

Balgie[]

(バ ルギー国)

Mentioned in: Fighter episode 8

A country referenced as bordering the country of Geltland. Its name is a play on Belgium, down to its Japanese being Barugii instead of Berugii (from its Dutch name Belgie). Therefore, Geltland is Germany.

BC Island[]

(ビーシー島)

Appears in: Episode 81, Fighter episode 21

Joe's home country, modeled off of Sicily. While it is a small island that is able to be traveled around in three hours, it is also corrupt in being ruled completely by Galactor at the time we are introduced to it in the original series.

The original series states that BC Island had been corrupt since Joe's youth, and his parents were deliberately assassinated due to defecting from Galactor (with Giuseppe Asakura having been considered one of the big bosses of the island). A completely different telling in its Fighter spotlight is at odds with this, likely due the writer being unaware of such a setting (and also even contradicts another Fighter episode): It is instead said that BC Island was peaceful when Joe was a child, until Galactor suddenly appeared and his parents just happened to have been killed by Galactor due to the invasion. It is also revealed that it had the nickname of "Springtime BC" in its pre-Galactor days.

In either case, BC Island was believed to have Galactor driven out after the first defeat of Galactor in the original series, but Fighter shows that the organization has taken it over again.

While it is translated as "BC" in most English contexts and the ADV Films subs and dub, the Sentai Filmworks subs for Fighter for some reason opted to call it "Vici Island". This loses out on the religious reference in the name, reflected in the episode by the church and Joe's childhood friend Alan being a priest that ultimately dies "crucified" in the light of a cross shape.

Its Sicilian inspiration was affirmed in the planning for a Gatchaman requel project, where it is stated in Joe's profile that BC Island is part of the country of Italy (such a real location name being used rather than Imaria or other substitutes).

Biabrasandra Countries[]

(ビアブラサンドラー諸国)

Mentioned in: Episode 4

A region that had suspicious seismic activity. The odd plural nature of this region is due to the fact that in the original scenario script, two different countries were specified by Nambu: Biyaarasandra, and Atrena.

For whatever reason, it was decided to cut the reference to Atrena and the remaining country's name was slightly changed.

Bien[]

(ビエン国)

Appears in: Episode 43

A country that was at war with Ameria, until a ceasefire was agreed upon. Its prince is a man named Romina, although his royal status and exact affiliation with the country are not mentioned in the actual episode.

The name of this country appears to derive from Vienna, the capitol of Austria.

Chicilia[]

(チシリア国)

Mentioned in: Fighter episode 18

The home country of Galactor's "Chicilian Hawk" Heirich. Due to its poverty and it being the laughingstock of the world, Heirich joined Galactor and was motivated to make something of himself.

As with BC Island, it would seem that Sicily proved to be an influence for this fictional country. It is thus referred to as Cicily in the Sentai Filmworks subtitles.

Congol[]

(コンゴール国)

Appears in: Fighter episode 28

A country based off the Congo, which Galactor has exploited for its uranium mines.

Degiris[]

(デギリス国)

Mentioned in: Fighter episode 2, 3, 31

A country based off England or perhaps the whole of Great Britain, with its name deriving from Igirisu (a term used for such). The Galactor forces are mentioned as having conquered this country among others in Iroppa, in the episode's opening narration.

Dokual[]

(ドクアール国)

Appears in: Episode 77

Doria Kingdom[]

(ドリア王国)

Appears in: Episode 35

A desert kingdom ruled by King Abra, though he was actually killed and replaced by Berg Katse at a point prior to the episode.

Dryard Republic[]

(ドライヤード共和国)

Mentioned in: OVA episode 1

A country who is mentioned having its capital city, Mayol, destroyed in a suspicious incident.

Eastoria[]

(イーストリア国)

Mentioned in: OVA episode 2

A submarine from this country was reported to go missing in the Sealt Sea.

Egiris[]

(エ ギリス国)

Mentioned in: Fighter episode 7

The country where Tetsuan City is located. It may or may not be a misnomer for Degiris, though since it hadn't yet been conquered by Egobossler like Degiris was described as, it may be a different sort of locale just with a strikingly similar name.

Tetsuan City[]

(テツアン市)

Appears in: Fighter episode 7

A city that is rich in iron, evident from its name. This causes it to become a target of Count Egobossler and Galactor.

In the Sentai subs, it is mistranslated as Tehsran despite clearly being heard as "Tetsuan" and the references to its iron.

Einstan[]

(アインシュタン国)

Mentioned in: Episode 46

Referred to as Einshutan in the ADV FIlms dub. A defected member of Galactor named Arthur Kelly recorded an important conversation between Berg Katse and the Prime Minister of this country and planned to sell it so he could get money for his ailing mother, making him a marked man.

Franbel[]

(フランベル国)

Appears in: Episode 64

A beautiful northern country that was formerly under dictatorship. However, its more scenic locations are contrasted by the poorer areas of its capital where the people struggle.

Its name seems to be a portmanteau of France (Furansu) and Belgium (Berugii), though the scenario script outright puts its location somewhere in Scandinavia.

Centlana[]

(セントラナ)

The capital city of Franbel. It is shown to hold a snow festival for the citizens in honor of them ousting the dictator General Somure from the country. It is renamed Palma in the G-Force dubbing.

Fulguinea[]

(フルギニア国)

Appears in: II episode 5

A jungle-based country seen in this episode, which Galactor attacks and uses a special machine to convert its citizens into rampaging Neanderthals. Its name is a pun off of the island of New Guinea, although some translations may miss out on this and render the name as Fruginia.

Geltland[]

(ゲルトランド国)

Appears in: Fighter episode 5 (mentioned), Fighter episode 8

It is first mentioned by Kempeler as being the country Galactor and the Egobossler Family fight on behalf of and will take hostages to be part of. The Science Ninja Team wind up ordered to travel to this country due to Galactor's data bank being located there. It is also the home of Egobossler's initial main base, and borders another country named Balgie.

Its name seems to be inspired from Geld, the German word for "Money", along with its Yiddish variant of Gelt. The Sentai Filmworks subs refer to it as Geltrand or Geltrant. Since it borders Balgie, Geltland is an obvious stand-in for Germany itself.

Satanhofen[]

(サタンホーフェン)

A fortress city in the country of Geltland. It is the home of Count Egobossler, existing up to episode 14 of Fighter. Its likeness is recreated for the new base of Galatown in episode 15.

Its name is often debated over being "Satanhofen" or "Satanforhen", due to its pronunciation of satanhohen as well as longstanding debate and confusion over the proper katakana notation. It is possible it derives from various villages with the name "Hofen" in Germany, but with "Satan" added on for the extra evil vibe.

Gurushia[]

(グルシア国)

Mentioned in: Fighter episode 26

A country that the city Cowbella is located nearby. It seems to parody the name of the country Georgia, which was formerly rendered as Gurujia after its Russian name Gruziya.

The Sentai subs for Fighter refer to it as Grussia.

Hontwal Republic[]

(ホントワール共和国)

Appears in: Episode 46 (mentioned), Episodes 51 to 53, 61

A seemingly beautiful and peaceful country, thought to be neutral in affairs but in actuality its military and police have been controlled by Galactor behind the president's back. Red Impulse was sent undercover to investigate the corruption.

Its name is a pun on honto wo aru, meaning "It exists"/"It's real", which the country could be translated literally to be "Real Republic". Official spellings seen for the country in media include Hontwal and Hontwahl.

Sage City[]

(セイジ市)

Appears in: Episode 61 (scenario version)

The capital city of Hontwal. Its name is brought up in the scenario of "The Phantom Red Impulse", when Katse threatens to destroy the city and children are seen playing at its park.

Imaria[]

(イマリア国)

Appears in: Episode 104

A country affected by Galactor's Black Hole Plan, which caused its volcano to erupt and cause mass casualties.

The name appears to derive from Italy (Italia), with the "ta" replaced with "ma".

Indelhia[]

(インデリア国)

Appears in: Episode 50, 88

A vast country plagued by long periods of drought, which the ISO is attempting to rectify with the creation of a dam.

Its name derives from a combination of India and Delhi.

LuMan Kingdom[]

(ルーマン王国)

Appears in: Episode 19

A rich, Monaco-inspired country rife with racing and gambling.

The name of this country is inspired by the Le Mans 24 Hour auto race and the film with the title, which in Japanese is rendered "Ru Man". Localizations may render it as either Luman or Ruman as a result of the romaji.

Monalince Kingdom[]

(モナリンス王国)

Appears in: Episode 66

A small kingdom ruled by Queen Flake, that seems patterned after Monaco.

Nerway[]

(ネルウェー国)

Appears in: Fighter episode 33

The equivalent of Norway, which features when Dr. Beary is traveling there to study the currents of the North Pole.

Paron Island[]

(パーロン島)

Appears in: Fighter episode 4

An independent island nation, ruled by the Queen Mariabeth, that is targeted by Galactor.

Sainan[]

(サイナン国)

Appears in: Episode 97

Shark Peninsula[]

(シャーク半島)

A peninsula located in Sainan, where the Leona 3 was estimated to fall.

Shosken Kingdom[]

(ショースケン王国)

Appears in: Episode 69

A country based off of Egypt, located in the Ohara desert. This is where Jinpei meets a shopkeeper, who believes him to look just like her dead son Jinbei and want to treat him as her own child.

Tangania Kingdom[]

(タンガニア国王)

Mentioned in: Fighter episode 23

The king of this country is a pivotal figure in the episode, who Galactor wants to assassinate by way of mind-controlling people to do so.

Tritan[]

(トリタン国)

Mentioned in: Episode 11

Developers from this country were responsible for crafting the super plane The Blue Hawk.

(ホランド国)

Appears in: Fighter episode 3 (mentioned), Fighter episode 16

A stand-in for the Netherlands (referred to as Oranda/Holland in Japanese), and translated alternatively as Detch or Wholland in the Sentai Filmworks subs.

Damsterdam[]

(ダムステルダム)

Mentioned in: Fighter episode 16

President Eisen's aide Jim Billet is said to have been killed in this city, with it having been treated by the police as a traffic accident and not an assassination.

Its name is a clear shout-out to Amsterdam, capital of the Netherlands.

Orsha[]

(オルシア)

Mentioned in: Fighter episode 3

The capital city of Wholland, mentioned in the narration about Galactor's conquests in Iroppa. A city by this name does exist in the real world, but in the country of Belarus.

Cities and Towns[]

These places are located in unknown countries in the Gatchaman atlas, but also play pivotal roles in the series.

Aegypt[]

(イジプート)

Appears in: II episode 6

An experimental city modeled after Egypt, created by Dr. Sugata and made to showcase his experiments with Pyramid Power. It is located on the south side of the Road Islands.

Sentai Filmworks opts to use the more antiquated spelling of Egypt, while its intended spelling in Japanese is left up for debate; Igyput may be one, going by the characters used, though fan translations of the 1990s often mistook the pronunciation as "ijipuu tu" and decided to claim the location's name as Egypt II.

Alpha City[]

(アルファー市)

Appears in: Episode 93

A tourist city with approximately 300,000 people. Galactor attacks it to draw out the Science Ninja Team, who are prevented by Dr. Nambu from going out to rescue it as to not alert Galactor to their presence. Thankfully, the UN Forces manage to help the citizens escape into shelters.

Babraltar[]

(バブラルタル)

Appears in: Fighter episode 11

The destination of the Galactor train Z-Press, which has departed from Satanhofen and posing as a decoy and obstacle for the Science Ninja Team to overcome while Mechandol plans to invade Agrica.

It is referred to erroneously as Pabraltar in the Sentai Filmworks subs for Fighter, due to the similarity (but differences) in the characters for "ba" and "pa".

Cowbella City[]

(カウベラ市)

Appears in: Fighter episode 26

A city targeted by Galactor due to the location of the ISO Space Pulse Institute, that happens to be in it by the border of the country Gurushia. To accomplish this, Galactor uses cyborg cows to infiltrate the city's Cow Festival.

In the Sentai subs, it is spelled as Caubella.

Galatown[]

(ギャラタウン)

Appears in: Fighter episode 15

The new underground city base of Galactor, constructed after the fall of Satanhofen.

(ゴースト市)

Appears in: Episode 15

Green City[]

(グリーン市)

Appears in: Episode 15

A town attacked by the Jellyfish Lens.

Kanal[]

(カナル)

Appears in: Fighter episode 5

Also spelled as Canall in the Sentai subs. A port town full of refugees that the Science Ninja Team must rescue, only for the process to be impeded by Galactor. It has a similar mountaintop castle to that of Paron Island.

Olive Sea[]

(オリーブの海)

Appears in: Fighter episode 5

The sea in which the port town Kanal is located.

Lawn Park City[]

(ロンパーク市)

R City[]

(アール市)

Appears in: Episode 102

Seatoland City[]

(シートランド市)

Appears in: II episode 17

An underwater city inside a protective dome. It is run by a Dr. Seaski, whose daughter Milly is revealed to be an old friend of Jun.

Sentai Filmworks' subs for II rather oddly refer to it as "Seatrand", even though its name comes from a shortening of "Seatopia" + Land.

Semblan City[]

(サンブラン市)

Appears in: Fighter episode 47

A city in peril of a giant iceberg.

Serraria City[]

(セラリア市)

Appears in: Fighter episode 29

A city targeted by Galactor's mecha due to the presence of its mantle factory.

Short City[]

Appears in: Episode 68

Utoland City[]

(ユートランド市)

This city is the main setting of the series, though the country it is located in has never quite been specified. Some may theorize it to be Ameris, but since the Science Ninja Team are only visiting that country for the first time in episode 24 (and were meant to escort the Blue Hawk there in episode 11), Utoland may rather be in a neighboring country and is located in a city facing the sea. It seems to be a location popular with hippies.

The Science Ninja Team members and Dr. Nambu all live and work out of here, and it appears to be located on a border crossing. Whichever country Utoland may be in appears to be the one threatened in episode 54, although at the time its name was still unstated on-screen.

While present since the start, the city's "Utoland" name was only revealed starting with episode 85; prior to that, fans would have had to rely on old setting materials' claims that the team had been operating in Kanagawa Prefecture (which was evidently discarded in Tatsunoko's aim to go with a fictional and "stateless" setting).

ADV's dubbing scripts erroneously refer to it as "Jutland" (which is a peninsula that Denmark is located on); this may be assumed to be due to the romaji being Yuutorando and the "y" sound in Japanese occasionally being used to substitute for what would be the "j" sound in English, causing this sort of mistake. It was, however, stated that ADV was supplied with a list of Anglicized names for locations in the series including this one, but that errors still somehow carried through. An '80s illustration by Sadao Miyamoto affirms the "Utoland" spelling, with the name likely coming from "utopia" + "land".

In the Infini-T Force series, Amehon is stated to be the country that Utoland is located in, though it only seems applicable to that franchise. Meanwhile, the OVA continuity by Tatsunoko and Artmic would place Utoland as being a city in Ameris.

Gorakuen Stadium[]

Appears in: Episode 63

A famous baseball stadium in Utolland, which is exploited by Galactor for their latest plot and where they abduct the Monsters baseball player Shimanaga from.

In the scenario period, this place was referred to as Golden Stadium and also stated to be located in America, before revisions were made. Its finalized name is based off the Korakuen Stadium, a baseball stadium that existed in Tokyo up until 1987. The Monsters team themselves are a parody of the Yomiuri Giants, who were famously associated with Korakuen.

Utopia[]

(ユートピア)

Appears in: Episode 38

Aladdin Desert[]

(アラジン砂漠)

Mentioned in: Episode 42

The Galactor captain Blacky claims Galactor's headquarters is here when asked by Ken, though it is a lie. It is unknown if an "Aladdin Desert" actually exists or not in this world, though the punny name would fit with other locations.

Appears in: Episode 6

Boggy Island[]

Real Locations used[]

Africa[]

The plot of episode 13 of the original series takes place within this continent, as well as a race in episode 27. It is also mentioned in episode 39 of II, when the New God Phoenix is revealed to have sunk off the north coast of Africa.

Andalusia[]

Appears in: II episode 39

A community in Spain, pivotal in the plot of the episode and where Joe meets Chinita.

Andromeda Nebula[]

Not a country, but a location in outer space. This galaxy is referenced within the final three episodes of the original series, as being where Leader X's home world Selector was situated until its destruction.

The Alps[]

Appears in: Episode 23

The power plant that supplied power to Galactor's Mecha Ball was located here.

China[]

This country is mentioned in episode 13, for its lake Lop Kur (in reality, named Lop Nor).

This location is brought up in episode 91, in reference to the Titanic and its sinking.

New York[]

It can also be seen referenced in the scenario version of episode 63, where the two baseball teams playing at the stadium are the "New York Orions" and the "Chicago Shadows".

Russia[]

While this place's name gets utilized in II, it is adapted to be the name of a whole continent rather than a singular country spanning Europe and Asia. The Sentai Filmworks subs, however, opt to interpret the Rosia reading of its name as "Russiar".

South America[]

This continent is name-dropped in II (no "Ameria" or "Ameris" to be had in the name), and locations such as the Amazon and Andes were already pivotal in episode plots in the original series as well as that sequel.
