Maya (マヤ) was a guest villain character who appeared in episode 70 of Science Ninja Team Gatchaman.
Background[]
Maya was a member of Galactor in charge of controlling their Mannequin robots. Her parents and all of her siblings were also part of the organization, making her stuck there by birth although she expressed the desire and motivation to leave and have the choice to do what she wanted with her life.
Appearance[]
Maya appeared as a slender woman with long, brown hair and narrow green eyes. She wore a green, belted shirt with a deep blue turtleneck top beneath it, red bell-bottom pants, and teal shoes.
When in disguise to control the mannequins, she wears a blonde wig in a high ponytail along with a blue masquerade mask to conceal her eyes. She also sports a purple, red, and dark blue bodysuit with a red cape and long, black gloves.
Personality[]
Maya was shown to be a cunning individual, able to manipulate herself into being rescued by making one of her slaughter incidents look like the mannequins were targeting her. This was so she could be taken to a hospital, and then use the robots to kill more civilians such as a nurse there.
But Maya was also naive enough to believe that if she could kill the Science Ninja Team, she'd be able to leave Galactor, being unaware of the full scale of Berg Katse's cruelty and deception.
Relationships[]
Joe[]
Joe insisted on saving Maya as his first priority, rather than investigating the robots, leading to some friction from Ken who believed Maya was bait by Galactor. Joe refused to believe this, although later saw the truth after Maya's disguise came apart during her death. She lamented that she wanted to live a free life like other humans did, and he had to leave her body behind.
When he first encountered Maya, he was taken by her beauty and remarked on it as he got her to a hospital. The doctor of the National Hospital also commented on how apparently gorgeous she was.
Berg Katse/The Lady Captain[]
Maya expressed her desire to leave Galactor to her boss, who she didn't know was Katse in disguise. The Lady Captain promised her that if she could take out the Science Ninjas, she would be able to leave.
After Maya failed in her mission, she was met with a gun-toting Katse, who told her it was foolish for her to ever expect to leave Galactor as a child born of its operatives. He shot and killed her for both her failure and her intent in wanting to leave them, as the secrets of Galactor must never get out.
Alterations in International Adaptations[]
Battle of the Planets[]
Maya was renamed Tyna. In this adaptation, she is only working for Spectra because they have abducted her family and have them held captive on a slave planet. Maya's death is censored and toned down to Tyna tripping and injuring her leg, and insisting she'll be fine. Zark explains after the defeat of the Robotoids, Tyna has been able to escape Spectra and she and her family have escaped to a friendly planet of the Federation named Tolak.

Maya was voiced by Rihoko Yoshida, who would go on to voice other roles in the show including the Devil Star that had killed Joe's parents.

- Maya marks the third and final Galactor woman in the series (after Lucy and Devil Star #2) to have either fallen for Joe or had him take interest in her, only to meet a horrible end. In a diversion from the previous two though, she is brunette except when in disguise.
- Unusually, Ken refers to Maya's mannequins as "cyborgs" in the episode, even if they appear to have no human components at all.
