NTT Gatchaman is a fanterm for a series of commercials that were made to promote the Internet service provider NTT-East in the early 2000s. Some of the commercials featured Japanese boy band group SMAP portraying live action versions of the characters, while the other two were animated by Tatsunoko and featured modernized costume redesigns of the Ninja Team.

In addition to the commercials, there was a light novel sent by e-mail by NTT-East as a gift for new subscribers. To this date, the contents of the light novel remain vague and untranslated. The commercials would later be included as bonus content on the DVD release of Tatsunoko's "KARAS" OVA series.

These redesigns eventually proved influential to Felix Ip, who worked on the scrapped IMAGI CGI film, and inspired the initial character concepts seen in a trailer (although the IMAGI Jun wound up with a skirt instead of the leggings).

Plot of Commercials[]

The year is 2013. Tokyo has become independent from the rest of Japan, but is embroiled in a war between three different factions in five-on-five battles.

There is "Buffalo", the winning team based on Shinjuku. Then, there is "Galactor" ruling Ikebukuro, who will stop at nothing to win. And finally, there is the smallest group in Shibuya, the "Gatchaman" team. This storyline was used to explain the setting of the ads, featuring the team fighting throughout the cities.
