Rumi Borombo (ルミ・ボロンボ) is a guest character that appeared in episode 79 of Science Ninja Team Gatchaman.
Background[]
Rumi lost her mother as a small child, leaving her to be raised by her father in a single parent lifestyle. She winds up in the "damsel in distress" role for much of the plot of this episode, only being actually shown and rescued in the end.
Appearance[]
Rumi is a slender young woman whose beauty is instantly commented upon by Ken when he sees her photo. She has long, medium-brown hair and green eyes. She wears a long, belted deep pink tunic with lighter trim on its short sleeves, with the belt and a turtleneck tank she wore beneath the tunic both being a blue-green. She completes this outfit with a pair of white bell-bottom jeans, and deep pink shoes.
Personality[]
Rumi is the classic damsel in distress type of girl, passive and waiting to be saved due to being tied up and left in a Galactor dungeon. She falls in love with Gatchaman at first sight, and desperately wants to know who he is, thinking of him even after she leaves with her father to go home.
Relationships[]
Dr. Borombo[]
Borombo adores his daughter very much and will do anything to protect her, which leads him into the bind he's in during the episode with being blackmailed into collecting information on the ISO. However, he turns out to have a trick up his sleeve in making sure what data he collects would instantly be erased.
After Rumi was returned to him, Borombo warned her to be careful on the train and was afraid she'd get abducted again.
Ken[]
Ken is curious at seeing Rumi's photo but learns of her predicament. He eventually finds her after kicking her and mistaking her for a Galactor goon, due to her being obscured by a cloak when tied up. He would protect Rumi for the remainder of his battle against Galactor in the episode, before managing to get her back to her father.
After being rescued, Rumi asks Ken if she can see him without his helmet but he ignores her, and she gets distracted by the arrival of her dad. Later, on the train, Rumi happens to run into Ken out of costume and wonders if he could be the one briefly before moving along. Ken thinks to himself that it's better off she doesn't know who he is, even if he may have held any interest in her earlier. After all, his mission comes before love.
Alterations in International Adaptations[]
Battle of the Planets[]
Rumi was renamed Amanda Gregg. She makes her affection towards Mark known more at the end, dropping hints to him in costume that she'd want someone to care for her while he insists "Someone else will". She and her father converse on the train about Mark, with her realizing he has someone else on his mind other than her.
Amanda ultimately seems to recognize Mark out of costume, thinking of how she knows he has someone else he loves but that she wishes it could've been her. Meanwhile, Mark thinks of how he has his duty to G-Force and his affection for Princess, and can't encourage another girl. Zark ultimately narrates how he's proud of Mark for turning down Amanda, and that Amanda may be heartbroken but she'll move on.
G-Force: Guardians of Space[]
Rumi's counterpart is named Patty Jamison in this localization.
Voice Actors[]
Rumi was voiced by Emiko Tsukada, who had previously voiced Julia.
