Saburo Kamo (鴨三郎), nicknamed "Grandpa" (ジサマ Jii-sama), is the Chief Engineer of the Science Ninja Team, introduced in Gatchaman Fighter.
Background[]
He was assigned by Dr. Nambu to build the new Gatcha Mechas and weapons and instruct the team on how to use them in the eventuality that the team needed them. This became a necessity when the New God Phoenix was destroyed and he had to introduce the Gatchaspartan.
Appearance[]
Kamo is a heavyset, middle-aged man dressed in a two-tone blue engineering uniform with an orange scarf. He wears a matching two-tone blue cap with a gold and red "G" symbol in the center. Among his physical characteristics, he has thick, dark gray hair and a rather large gray mustache.
Personality[]
Kamo was asked by Nambu to "look after the Science Ninja Team" after Nambu was promoted to the director of the ISO, and treats them much like a father would. He once had a wife and a married couple of children, but they have all since passed away, leaving a grandson as his only surviving relative. After the collapse of the ISO headquarters and death of Nambu, he became the official chief giving orders to the team.
By the end of the series, while others have lost hope in the Science Ninja Team's survival and the idea they could make it back, Kamo insists "Gatchaman can never die. They are the immortal phoenix!" and remains optimistic when he hears about a strange energy being having escaped Leader Z.
