The Jellyfish Lens
The Jellyfish Lens is the titular biological weapon of episode 15 of Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, "The Fearsome Jellyfish Lens” (January 7, 1973).
Background[]
Under the guidance of Sosai X, Galactor scientists engineered the deadly life-form within the toxic waters of Ghost City, an abandoned city decimated by man-made pollution. The Jellyfish Lens has the ability to inflate like a helium balloon and travel at impressive airspeeds, using its multiple crystalline eyes to concentrate sunlight into beams of destructive energy, ones powerful enough to instantly melt steel and vaporize victims to ash.

Trivia[]
- The Jellyfish Lens and its storyline was among a trend in Japanese media that featured monstrous antagonists born from or summoned by environmental pollution as it was a topical issue in the country during the early 1970s. Notable examples from this trend includes the titular opponent of Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971), the majority of Dr. Gori's creations from Spectreman (1971-1972), the main motive of Earthly invasion in Gamera vs. Zigra (1971), and the cause of Apocalyptic disaster in Prophecies of Nostradamus (1974).
